Pic’s Peanut Butter
Beloved Kiwi brand, Pic's Peanut Butter, has sustainability woven into its very DNA. Founded by Pic Picot, the company has grown from a small operation in a family garage to a renowned name in the world of peanut butter, while maintaining a steadfast commitment to the environment and community.
Pic's sustainability journey is driven by Pic himself, who believes in living a sustainable life. This philosophy is reflected in every aspect of the company's operations. From sourcing to production, Pic's Peanut Butter strives to make a positive impact on the planet.
As a Certified B Corporation Pic's Peanut Butter prioritises sustainability and environmental responsibility. The company ensures its actions align with its commitment to people, planet, and purpose. One of the cornerstones of Pic's sustainability efforts is its partnership with Ekos to measure and manage its carbon footprint. Pic's Peanut Butter is a Certified Carbon Zero company, offsetting 100% of its emissions. This initiative includes switching from road to sea freight and double-loading containers to minimise trips, leading to a significant reduction in overall emissions.
Energy efficiency is at the heart of Pic's operations. The installation of 486 solar panels provides 30% of the company's energy needs, cutting reliance on non-renewable sources. Additionally, Pic's Peanut Butter provides electric car charging and bike racks for all staff and visitors, promoting sustainable transportation options.
Water conservation is a critical aspect of Pic's sustainability strategy. The company employs advanced irrigation systems to ensure efficient water use, minimising waste and optimising hydration for their crops. Rainwater harvesting systems are in place to capture and store rainwater for use during dry periods.
Waste management and recycling are important too. Pic's Peanut Butter uses recyclable glass jars with minimal branding, encouraging reuse. They actively promote jar returns, repurposing them for local businesses and waste reduction. Pic's helped launch Refill Revolution, supporting reuse and refillery initiatives for other packaged goods companies. This innovative approach reduces waste while supporting local businesses and promoting a circular economy.
Community engagement is a vital part of Pic's sustainability mantra. The company prioritises local suppliers, reducing emissions and strengthening community ties. Partnering with Te Tai Tokerau Northland farmers and the Ministry for Primary Industries, Pic's aims to develop a New Zealand peanut industry to produce 100% locally grown and made peanut butter for their Picsters. Pic's Peanut Butter also donates over 10% of its profits annually to charities and local community groups, demonstrating its commitment to giving back.
Pic's Peanut Butter creates a purpose-driven workplace that values people, planet, and community. The company provides tours of its factory daily. Transparency and communication are prioritised, with annual strategy and budget reports shared with all staff. Daily production meeting notes are sent to every staff member, and all-staff meetings are held monthly to communicate strategic priorities and updates. Pic's promotes internally wherever possible and participates in upskilling and consulting with local education facilities on career pathways.
Staff welfare is of utmost importance. The company continuously improves based on feedback, with initiatives such as factory station rotation to prevent strain injuries, 10:30 am factory group stretches, free annual health checks, flu vaccinations and nutritious breakfast and lunch options. Staff community days include activities like cold water swims, tree planting and mental health practice. The Planet and People & Culture workstreams are made up of staff from departments across the company who meet to develop projects to improve the business.
Pic's Peanut Butter is a shining example of how a company can integrate sustainability into every aspect of its operations and we reckon that adds to the intense and delicious flavour in every jar of Outstanding Food Producer Awards medal-winning Pic's Peanut Butter.
